6/10
This is the third Ann Patchett book I've read this year (Bel Canto and Patron Saint of Liars were my other two) and it was the third time I was left a bit disappointed.
I'm not sure why I keep picking up A. P.'s books since I've never really been overjoyed with one. I just keep thinking, 'Well, this one sounds really good, maybe I was just in a funk the last time I read one of her books.'
I can't be in a funk every time I read one of her novels, can I?
This book explored the dynamics of family in every aspect - whether you are family by blood, marriage, adoption or friendship. It had some wonderful writing moments but over all the story just felt forced.
All 295 pages took place in a 24 hour period - which, I think, is a really difficult thing to do well. It felt like I was snow-plowing through and I was just tired after the effort of finishing the thing.
Anyway, not a book I would recommend. On to the next!
